Parliamentary elections in Slovakia took place on Saturday June 17, 2006. The winner, left-wing party Direction – Social Democracy, obtained 29 percent of votes. The second place with 18 percent of votes was for Slovak Democratic and Critian Union, the leading party of the former government. Other 4 parties reached the obligatory minimum of 5%: SNS (Slovak National Party), SMK (Party of the Hungarian Coalition), ĽS-HZDS (People´s party-Movement for a Democratic Slovakia) and KDH (Christian Democratic Movement). There is a new Slovak social orientated government leaded by Robert Fico after 8 years of cabinet headed by Mikulas Dzurinda. The ambitious program of reforms of Dzurinda´s cabinet in the spheres like justice, fiscal policy, and pension system leaded Slovakia to join the UE in the year 2004. At the other side reforms were the reason of relative dissatisfaction among some groups of people. As a result of it the Democratic and Christian Union isn´t member of the actual government. It is composed by Slovak National Party, and People´s Party – Movement for a Democratic Slovakia together with the winner of the elections: Direction – Social Democracy. The Governamental program recently approved will work on a reduccion of GDP, changes in mortgage system, a Christmas bonus for retired people, indemnity for people who lost their savings in the non bank institutions and anulation of the payments to the board of health system. As the new cabinet says: the high cost of these goals will be covered with a money they´ll save in the administration.. Besides these changes, new government will continue the steps of the former cabinet in the field of foreign policy, lead by Jan Kubiš.
